You’re a Cat.
Yeah... you’re a Cool Cat.
You’re a Cool Cat in a Jazz Band.

You’ve got a nickname. Sometimes you solve mysteries. Otherwise, you’re playin’ gigs, practicing, or just kickin’ it.

JAZZCATS is a minimal game, use it to play all your favorite investigative or dungeon adventures. But remember that what you are doing is illegal. Always.

RULES: 
•Give yourself a nickname | roll 1d6, the result is your 
   SIZE (max HP and how many Things you can carry).
   Subtract this number from rolls if you try to be Stealthy, 
   add this number to rolls if you try to Swing someone.

•Roll 1d6 for your AXE: 
   Horn, Sax, ‘Bone, Keytar, Skins, Double Bass

•Take a VICE: Grass, Ass, Dice, Dope, Hope, Hooch 

•Get a THING: Scissors, Lock pick, Yo-Yo, Phone 
   book, Dynamite, Flashlight

UNCERTAIN RESULTS: roll 1d20. If you pass 13, you succeed | if your Thing can help, add 1d6 | everything has three uses before it breaks down, wears out or runs out, Even your AXE. If it breaks, you’ll miss your gig | the bigger the AXE, the bigger the damage die | Now go solve some freakin mysteries!

COMBAT: Perform a test. If you succeed, you deal damage. If you fail, you are damaged. AXE DMG: 1-2, d6 | 3-4, d8 | 5-6, d10

SAVING THROWS: (Test your Luck, avoid danger): Roll d20, subtract your SIZE if applicable (like to avoid a trap).

HELP A COMPANION: You can only do this if you have an appropriate item and use it. Add +1d6 to their check. Positive or negative consequences of the outcome could also affect you.

PLAY A GIG: Head to the club to Heal and Advance. Everyone in the band rolls 1d6:| 1 Heal | 2 Fix one thing | 3 Learn slang | 4 Learn a spell | 5 Vice | 6 Encore (roll again, twice) | You can play up to 3 sets. Band mates can trade outcomes.

SLANG

Bad: Good
Cat’s Meow: Better than Bad 
Fried: Stinkin’ drunk
Smokin’: Playing well
Goof: Distracted cat
Zoot: Sharp Clothing
Tuna: Money
Fly: Smooth or slick

Use SLANG while describing an action to add +1 to a die roll.

SECRET SAUCE: When rolling for SIZE, if the player correctly calls the roll ahead of time, their JAZZCAT will have arcane abilities, and will know a single 1st level spell (they can get it from any OSR rulebook) which they can cast a once a day.
